Did You Know?

Women remain underrepresented in leadership and decision-making roles across the world and Indonesia is no exception.

Despite representing nearly half of the population, women continue to have limited access to spaces where decisions are made, from government to community leadership.

        Why Does This Happen?

Leadership gaps rarely begin in adulthood, they start much earlier.

In Bali, as in many parts of Indonesia, girls often grow up with limited opportunities to build confidence, voice, and visibility in their communities. For many young women, pathways to leadership are shaped by social and structural barriers such as:

        • Cultural norms that limit women’s participation in leadership
        • Limited access to decision-making spaces at the village level
        • Menstrual stigma that restricts participation in community and religious life
        • Limited health literacy affecting wellbeing and confidence
        • Few visible female leadership role models
        • Restricted pathways into leadership and governance

Without opportunities to develop leadership skills early in life, many young women grow up without seeing leadership as a space where they belong.

        Our Commitment

This International Women’s Day, Bali Children Foundation and dsm-firmenich are advancing the Women in Leadership 2026 program — supporting the next generation of women leaders in Bali.
Through this initiative, 900+ young women in North Bali will participate in a 13-week leadership journey designed to strengthen confidence, knowledge, and leadership capacity.

Participants will engage in a dynamic curriculum including:
        • Inspiring female presenters from universities and business leaders
        • Leadership identity in the Balinese cultural context
        • Menstrual literacy and body confidence
        • Sexual health, consent, and safety
        • Male allyship and destigmatization
        • Capstone community impact projects

The program equips young women not only with knowledge but with the confidence and voice to participate, lead, and create change within their communities.
