In 2018 disaster struck and an earthquake damaged most of the school buildings in North Lombok and the Gili Islands.
Then Covid-19 hit and schools were closed. Lombok students missed significant learning opportunities for 4 years. As a result of interrupted learning, their literacy and numeracy scores are concerningly low.
Sadly many of the classrooms that were damaged by the earthquake have not been fully renovated.
This creates another issue, where the schools have overcrowded classes. SDN 4 Sigar Penjalin has 49 students in Grade 1 and 40 students in Grade 3. SDN 2 Sigar Penjalin has 36 students in Grade 1. It’s impossible for one teacher to manage these big classes alone. It’s vital now to give them the teaching they need to be successful.
We need to hire three teachers - adding one extra teacher per room so with team-teaching the large class can be covered. These are qualified teachers and we’ll provide extra training to ensure they understand the children’s learning gaps.
To support a team teacher for one year it costs Rp 10,000,000 per annum.
