FOOD & LITERACY RELIEF - LOVE FOR LEMBONGAN
Our LOVE for LEMBONGAN is immeasurable and understand so many people also have a deep connection to the island and the local people. This campaign is our way to give back to the community, who have always welcomed visitors to their island home with open arms.
Since COVID-19 took hold in March 2020, it has impacted every corner of the globe.
For the Lembongan locals it is likely to be the biggest and most far reaching challenge of their lifetime. With tourism responsible for majority of income and driving private enterprise, the island has been at a standstill since March 2020.
We (Mal & Tania Walker) returned to Lembongan in January 2021 and have seen first hand the enormous impact the pandemic has had here and will continue to have until international travel resumes.
The personal struggles and closure of 95% of businesses is heartbreaking: there is no government support or safety net, for the few that have remained employed they are on reduced base salaries and with no service which often makes up 50% of their income.
FOOD RELIEF
The ability to put food on the table has become challenging for so many. Our aim is to deliver food packages of staples ( rice, oil, sugar, noodles) to as many families as possible. We can assure you, your contributions to this fundraising effort will be received with the greatest of gratitude by the Lembongan community.
The landscape has changed dramatically, the most cost effective staple for families are tempeh, tofu, eggs and rice which they also mix with corn and cassava to bulk up rice supplies.
For most of the population consumption of chicken and fish has decreased considerably. Fishing by boat is now not an option for many simply because they can not afford the fuel. Therefore many people are only using canoes, SUP boards and even tyre rings to fish, which impacts where they can fish (only inside the reef) and consequently resulting in smaller varieties and quantities.
We will work across both Nusa Lembongan & Nusa Ceningan to facilitate distribution to those most in need.
LITERACY - EDUCATION
On our return to Lembongan, after spending time with both friends and our staff, who all have school age children, it became apparent to us very quickly that education was another area that has been hugely impacted.
With primary schools having been closed since March 2020 to October 2021 and online learning being conducted via Whats App. We hold great concern for the 6 – 8 year olds on the island who have missed out on vital learning of basic Indonesian literacy which is crucial during Grades 1, 2 & 3.
We have the commitment of our charity partners, Bali Children Foundation (BCF), who have developed an Indonesian Literacy Curriculum for these grades and will provide teachers to facilitate the learning in extra after school classes.
Our aim is to raise enough funds to provide the 444 children in Grades 1, 2 & 3 across 5 primary schools, the opportunity to re-gain the essential literacy that is usually taught in the first years of primary school.
DONATIONS
We understand it has been an extremely difficult time for so many people, COVID has not discriminated, this horrendous infectious virus has infiltrated the lives of everyone in every country on the planet.
Its impact on our daily lives has been immense, however our ability to survive with it around us is dependent on where we live in this global space and the industry we are reliant on. If you are in a position to donate as little as $10, this contribution will go a long way to helping the Lembongan locals. To help with the context, $10 will buy a 10kg bag of rice, which is not grown on Nusa Lembongan.
Your donations will go direct to the Lembongan community.
All donations will be received by Bali Children Foundation, a registered charity in both Australia and Indonesia.
THE PEOPLE
As harsh as the situation is currently and will be for some time yet, the local community remain humble, have shown incredible resilience and admirable efforts to pivot their skills where possible.
We are so proud to be a small part of this wonderful community. It is with heavy hearts of the reality here that we have decided to reach out to our networks in an effort to raise money to give them hope and some relief in the journey ahead.

25 August - Thanks to our donors, tourism returns to Lembongan

We feel it is time to reach out and once again thank all of our incredibly generous donors to the Love for Lembongan fundraiser. Your support through out COVID was nothing short of amazing and gave the local Lembongan so much; in the form of food relief, remedial literacy and numeracy programs, community health checks, providing medication to the disadvantaged and environmental initiatives which included the development of a community garden.
More importantly you gave HOPE. It was this sense of family and support that helped sustain them during a time of immense challenges, the locals knew they had people from afar caring about them.
As we move forward into the next phase, Love for Lembongan is focused on supporting community initiatives that are sustainable and beneficial for the longer-term. We will also continue to support those most in need.
Sadly, last week a local family lost their two bedroom house and kitchen in a fire, destroying everything they owned. The family of four ( two children aged 5 & 8 years) have had support from family and friends, however, as you can imagine they are without many standard house hold items. Our team met with the family this week and have gathered a better understanding of how we can assist them. Donations are welcome and can made this platform or if you are on Lembongan, touch base with our team at The Lembongan Traveller office in Jungut Batu.
Since travel resumed and borders re-opened in April, Nusa Lembongan has seen a steady stream of visitors. It has been a welcome relief to all the locals to see the return of their much loved friends from Australia, New Zealand, UK, Europe and beyond.
Thank you so much to those who have chosen Lembongan as a travel destination in 2022, this is the greatest gift you could give. By booking accommodation, a massage, hiring a scooter, swimming with the manta rays, learning to surf, enjoying sunset drinks, trying different restaurants you ensure local families continue to be employed and businesses remain open.
Nusa Lembongan has re-opened with vigor, including the additions of some fantastic new restaurants and experiences to add to your island memories and ensure first time, plus return visitors will continue to fall in love with our island paradise. If you we don’t see you this year we hope to in 2023, Lembongan is ready to welcome you with open arms.

PRIORITY PATIENTS PROGRAM
As tourism returns, our work with “Love for Lembongan” and support of the community continues. Whilst food relief was initially our focus we are now moving into providing more sustainable support. At the end of 2021 we partnered with island angel Bunda to provide health care and medical checks to the elderly and disabled. During these visits we identified priority patients who were in need of further assistance.

Support – LOVE for Lembongan purchased Kadek a new core brace,new foot braces and shoes. Her previous braces were in terrible condition and had not been replaced for more than 4 years.

The team have been busy preparing and distributing 700 food packages for families across Nusa Lembongan and Ceningan this week.Thanks to your donations we have gifted over 5000 food packages since the beginning of COVID. With a population of 8000 ( 1500 – 2000 families) across both islands your generosity has enabled us to reach all families 2 to 3 times, giving much needed food supplies and support.We are blessed to be able to see the faces of so many brighten when they see the now familiar Love for Lembongan team in their pink t-shirts. The gift of hope is invaluable.The biggest highlight was being able to gift two lovely men ( one an amputee from diabetes and the other with a lame leg) a set of crutches each. This added mobility will give them so much more independence being able to move around their home and compound areas which were previously not accessible.We have endless gratitude to all our volunteers and community partners for their support today and throughout 2021. It has been a BIG year on so many fronts, together we have made a difference to the Lembongan community

17 November - Bunda's LOVE for LEMBONGAN

This week the “Love for Lembongan” team continued their work with island angel Bunda visiting the elderly and disabled to ensure they receive vital medication, health checks and sanitary care packages.
One of the greatest outcomes for us assisting Bunda, is seeing the endless love she shares, her sheer presence brings joy. As she holds the hands of patients, many of whom are blind, on hearing her voice you can see the immediate relief on their faces, knowing Bunda has come to care for them.
We have all been deeply touched by the connection Bunda has with her patients, these home visits are essential, otherwise these patients would not receive medication and care.
We identified more people in need of additional assistance, especially in the form of mobility aids ( crutches and walking frames).
Prevalent conditions include elderly requiring full time care by family members, diabetes requiring ongoing monitoring and in many cases has caused amputation, strokes causing varying degree of paralysis and hypertension.
From this recent partnership with Bunda we have completed 75 home visits and provided care packages to over 150 pregnant and breast feeding mothers.
The home visits are crucial beyond the challenges presented by COVID as it is the elderly and disabled who find it difficult to access medical services at the best of times.

LOVE for Lembongan team were this weekend providing care packages and health checks.
We partnered with Ibu Nyoman who is affectionately known as “Bunda” ( meaning Mother) by the community. She is an earth angel who brings healthcare to those most in need, working as a nurse and midwife at the Jungut Batu hospital for 35 years plus also operates her own private clinic on her days off and after hours.It is incredibly humbling to be able to be by her side and see how much she gives back to the Lembongan Community. Thanks to your donations we prepared care packages for pregnant mothers and joined her on home visits to the elderly and disabled, where she monitored vital signs, dispensed medication, gave sanitary supplies and diabetic supplements.Bunda’s connection with her patients is nothing short from amazing, a result from years of work in the community. Many of the elderly patients are blind, have diabetes and unable to move from their bed, relying on family to care for their most basic needs.Bunda consulted the patients and carers, giving details for medication dosages and comforting those who were distressed. She brings hope and health to those most in need, her commitment to the community is relentless. We will continue to work with Bunda once a week for the month of November, assisting her in reaching over 200 patients.Thank to everyone who has supported our fundraising efforts, together we can make a difference. Special thanks to our charity partners Bali Children Foundation for their ongoing support of the Lembongan community during these difficult times.
23 October Update - 700 families receive food relief

As optimism surrounds the re-opening of Bali, we remain focused on supporting the Lembongan community.Thanks to your donations we can continue to help those most in need. This includes providing food relief to migrant workers who are in integral part of our community and do not have the support their extended families.We are all hopeful the path forward is less challenging than the last 18 months and the island will start to see international visitors in the coming months.It is with immense gratitude that we have been able to facilitate the LOVE for LEMBONGAN food relief program. This is only possible thanks to our incredibly generous donors who have supported the campaign.We have received invaluable guidance from our charity partner Bali Children Foundation and been blessed to create the LOVE for LEMBONGAN team which combines over 50 volunteers from local businesses and community groups including; Tigerlillys Lembongan, Lembongan Island Beach Villas, Lembongan Surf Team, Tenang Villas, Beach Tonic Villa & Villa Lagarto.

Thanks to YOUR generosity, the food relief fundraiser is bringing much needed support & HOPE to the people of Nusa Lembongan. This week we delivered 1000 food packages to families Lembongan & Ceningan this week.
Seeing their smiles and eyes light up is a cherished moment, they are so grateful to know their wider family of “Lembongan lovers” are reaching out to help during these challenging times. We can assure you, they will be ready for you with open arms and hearts once travel resumes.
In addition, our friends at Tigerlillys are providing 600 nasi jingo ( prepared meals) and 300 fresh vegetable packs.
Our charity partners Bali Children Foundation are relentless in their support behind the scenes and on the ground in Lembongan.
A huge thanks also must go to all our local distribution volunteers & the Lembongan Surf Team for being an integral part of this awesome team effort.

Firstly, the daily escalation of cases and recent outbreak of the Delta variate throughout Indonesia, in Bali and the realisation there are cases and recently deaths on Lembongan is a harsh reality. The Delta variant, as it’s done around the world, has taken a grip of Indonesia and is forcing the medical system beyond its capacity. Only 4 weeks ago Bali was recording less than 50 cases a day, this has steadily been rising and now 800+ cases are being recorded daily. Bali figures include Nusa Lembongan as we come under the Klungklung regency.
Yes, these numbers may not be accurate or true reflection of actual cases, but the ratio of increase shows the severity of the situation. The reason the numbers are not correct, is because testing is not prolific and it must be paid for by the individual….. who has the money for a COVID test?
Secondly, the months of May and June ( for the first time since March 2020) had seen a very small, but steady trickle of domestic travellers to Lembongan, primarily from Bali. This trickle was giving the locals a glimmer of hope. Hope is EVERYTHING when your economy has been flattened for the last 18 months. This was combined with the optimism of plans set in place by the Bali Governor to re-open Bali in July to select countries. There was a planned pathway forward to recovery, however, due to the recent outbreak this was not realised and then replaced with restrictions and lockdowns through out the country

Literacy Update
The first pilot learning of the new Bali Children Foundation Literacy Program is being conducted in Cempaga in Northern Bali.
This is being done "camp learning" style with grade 1 & 2 students, learning the alphabet and sounds of letters through the animated module.
Your contributions have help support the development of this new syllabus which is planned to be rolled out in Lembongan when schools re-open in July and across 4 other regions in Bali.
Great progress to an initiative that was simply an idea less than two months ago.
Massive thanks to all who have donated and the team at Bali Children Foundation who are dedicated to education leading to employment.
25 March Update - Meeting with BCF
Thursday 25th Mar
Our recent meeting with Margaret from Bali Children Foundation gave us the opportunity to discuss and plan initiatives moving forward and how to utilise the funds raised for maximum benefit of the community. It will be an evolving discussion as the situation unfolds, vaccinations roll out, how plans for return of tourism play-out and the impact these changes have on the local community in the short and medium term.
Food Relief….
We plan to do another food distribution in April, we will re-assess then the items to be included as there is currently reasonable supply of fresh produce with many people farming during the wet season, however this will change as the rains end.
Literacy Relief….
Primary schools on Lembongan have been closed since March 2020 and online learning has been done via Whats App. Therefore the children who were meant to start Grade 1 in July 2020 haven’t actually “been” to school yet and along with their Grades 2 and 3 class mates have missed crucial literacy learning.
We have committed financial support to Bali Children Foundation for the development of a Literacy curriculum ( in Indonesian) aimed at Grades 1, 2 & 3. This curriculum will be used by BCF across 5 different regions in Bali, including Nusa Lembongan. BCF teachers, who are already based on Lembongan and implement BCF education programs within the schools will provide 2 after-school classes / week for each child, they will also develop a socialisation program and other initiatives to incentivise parents to encourage their children to attend these classes. The Lembongan Traveller’s fundraising campaign will support these initiatives as we see it fundamental to the future education of this younger generation to receive basic literacy learning.
We have reviewed the framework which is being used as the structure for the syllabus and the beginnings of the class modules, 16 weeks each with two modules. This dedicated literacy syllabus is being developed by BCF in parallel to the standard Indonesian primary curriculum so that resources and learning is maximised.
Currently, schools are aiming to re-open once teachers are vaccinated, for the beginning of the school year in July. It is being suggested by the Education department that they will initially go back at 50�pacity until further community based vaccination programs are completed.
It is BCF’s aim to start the Literacy program in July with the re-opening of schools on Nusa Lembongan.

11 March Update - Thank you for your support

Firstly, we have been overwhelmed by the support and generosity of our extended Lembongan Traveller network and we THANK YOU on behalf of the Lembongan community. This kindness has been echoed repeatedly by so many people in the last two weeks and also when we did our first “Food for Lembongan” fundraiser in April 2020. It is has shown, no donation is too small and together we can make a difference.
We have raised over $36,000 across both campaigns for the Lembongan community and reached over 1200 families, with more people to receive in the coming weeks. This is an outstanding achievement, a true testament to this special island and it’s incredible people for leaving an imprint on our hearts. This has been an opportunity for us all to acknowledge their act of kindness of sharing their island home with us, always welcoming visitors with open hearts and the most wonderful hospitality.
Thanks to your generosity, the latest “Food & Literacy Relief” campaign has raised over $20,000 in two weeks. We implemented Stage 1 with deliveries this week of 400 food packages consisting of rice, noodles, sugar and oil, these supplies were purchased from local Warungs on Lembongan.
Food packages were delivered to the Kepala Desa ( Village head) of Jungut Batu and Lembongan villages who then in turn will work with the Banjars of each village to ensure the packages go to those most in need. There are 4 Banjars in Jungut Batu and 6 in Lembongan which includes Nusa Ceningan.
